Nothing is sent to an AI model or a server:

Cleaning: it lowercases the text and keeps letters a–z, digits, apostrophes and hyphens; everything else becomes a space.

Phrases: it counts every 1-word, 2-word and 3-word sequence. Density is always the count divided by the total word count, for phrases of every length.

Stop words: 150 common words such as “the”, “and” and “of” are hidden from the 1-word list by default. Tick the option to show them. The 2- and 3-word lists keep them, so phrases like “of the” can appear there.

Colours: above 3.5% is red, above 2.5% is amber, and 0.5% or more is green. These are our rule-of-thumb flags, not Google thresholds.

Focus keyword: matched as an exact phrase, case-insensitive, at any length.

Also shown: total and unique words, sentence count, average sentence length, and reading time at 200 words per minute.

Output: the top 30 phrases, with an optional filter for density above 1%. “Copy as CSV” copies those rows to your clipboard.

A Real Example: One of Our Own Articles

We ran the checker’s own code on the body text of our AI Overview tracking guide: 1,419 words, 470 of them unique, about 8 minutes’ reading. Ten uses in 1,000 words is a density of 1%.

What keyword density should I aim for?

There is no official target, and Google doesn’t publish one. Write for the reader, make sure your main phrase appears naturally, and use the checker to catch repetition you didn’t intend.

Does this checker count multi-word phrases?

Yes. It lists the top 1-, 2- and 3-word phrases, and the focus keyword box takes a phrase of any length and reports its exact count and density.

Does the tool send my text anywhere?

No. All counting happens in your browser. Your text is not uploaded to us or to an AI service.

Why is a common word flagged red?

Short topic words, like “ai” in an article about AI, repeat naturally and cross the 3.5% flag easily. Check the 2- and 3-word phrases and read the text before cutting anything.

Can I export the results?

Yes. “Copy as CSV” copies the visible top 30 rows (phrase, count, density) to your clipboard, ready to paste into a spreadsheet.

{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "SoftwareApplication", "name": "Keyword Density Checker", "applicationCategory": "SEOApplication", "applicationSubCategory": "SEO Tool", "operatingSystem": "Any (web-based)", "url": "https://designcopy.net/en/keyword-density-checker/", "description": "Paste your article or page content to analyze keyword density for 1-word, 2-word, and 3-word phrases.
