The facility, operational since September 2024, has quickly become a flashpoint for local controversy. It’s not just another building – it’s a power-hungry monster that’s already straining the local grid.

Let’s talk numbers. The data center initially required 150 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough to power about 100,000 homes. And guess what? They’re planning to expand to 200,000 GPUs. More power, more problems. Memphis Light, Gas and Water is scrambling to keep up with these fluctuating demands. Not exactly a cakewalk. The expansion could increase energy consumption by up to 40%, per estimates from the International Energy Agency.

The facility sits in a historically Black community that’s already dealt with more than its fair share of pollution. Now they’ve got this. Residents are furious about the lack of community input. Nobody asked them if they wanted a massive data center in their backyard. Shocking, right? The new data center could increase local energy consumption by 15%, based on projections from the Electric Power Research Institute.

Then there’s the generator situation. Aerial footage captured 35 methane gas generators at the site – but they only had permits for 15. Oops. The Southern Environmental Law Center calls them “illegal.” Not a good look for a tech billionaire’s company.

The community isn’t taking this lying down. Local groups have written to authorities, demanding they deny further power allocations. They’re worried about grid reliability, air quality, and water access. SELC represents local residents who strongly oppose this project, describing the site as harmful to their community. Valid concerns, considering the circumstances. A 2023 Energy Information Administration report found that data centers account for nearly 2% of total U.S. electricity consumption, straining local grids.

Meanwhile, inside that controversial building sits “Colossus,” a supercomputer powered by over 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. It’s there to train xAI’s Grok model and reduce reliance on external servers. Impressive tech, sure – but at what cost to the community? The 100,000-GPU cluster consumes roughly 50 megawatts of power, equivalent to powering 40,000 homes, per data center energy benchmarks from Stanford researchers.

The whole situation highlights a familiar story: big tech moves in, local residents suffer the consequences. The facility is projected to consume approximately one million gallons of water daily, further straining local resources. Memphis is just the latest battleground in the ongoing struggle between technological advancement and community well-being. The power struggle continues – both literally and figuratively.

Elon Musk’s massive AI supercomputer in Memphis devours enough electricity to power 100,000 homes while a Black community fights back.

[243

post-261001","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ai-ethics-policy","et-has-post-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard
["GET
