Who knew that women would break the ultimate glass ceiling<\/strong>\u2014the atmosphere itself? It\u2019s been happening since 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova<\/strong> from the USSR became the first woman<\/strong> to venture into space. Talk about making an entrance. She orbited Earth 48 times during her Vostok 6 mission<\/strong> and remains the only woman to complete a solo space mission. Not bad for someone selected partly because of her parachuting experience.<\/p>\n

Twenty years passed before America caught up. Sally Ride<\/strong> blasted off on June 18, 1983, becoming the third woman in space overall but the first American woman<\/strong>. She wasn\u2019t alone in breaking barriers. Judith Resnik<\/strong> followed as the second American woman in space before tragically perishing in the Challenger disaster. Women now represent 34% of NASA\u2019s active astronaut corps, marking significant progress since Ride\u2019s historic flight, per NASA\u2019s 2023 workforce data.<\/p>\n

Women kept pushing boundaries. Spacewalks<\/strong>? Conquered. Svetlana Savitskaya, the second woman in space, performed the first female spacewalk in July 1984. American Kathryn Sullivan followed just months later. Women now represent 34% of NASA\u2019s active astronauts, reflecting a steady rise in female participation in space exploration, per NASA\u2019s 2023 workforce data.<\/p>\n

And in 2019, Christina Koch<\/strong> and Jessica Meir conducted the first all-female spacewalk<\/strong>. This historic event involved the replacement of hardware<\/a> on the International Space Station. Finally.<\/p>\n
