While Apple continues its predictable cycle of annual iPhone updates, the rumored iPhone 17 Air stands poised to shatter the monotony with what could be the company’s most dramatic redesign in years. Positioned strategically between the standard iPhone 17 and Pro models, the Air aims to replace the largely forgettable “Plus” model with something actually worth talking about. For once.
The standout feature? It’s thin. Really thin. Rumors suggest a thickness between 5.5mm and 6.25mm, making it the skinniest iPhone ever made. The iPhone 6 was practically obese at 6.9mm by comparison. Of course, the camera bump will still stick out like an awkward teenager at prom – reportedly pushing total thickness to 9.5mm in that area.
Apple’s design team apparently spent late nights debating materials. Some reports claim an aluminum unibody, while others insist on a titanium-aluminum hybrid. The titanium would help prevent another embarrassing “Bendgate” situation. Remember that? Good times.
The back might revert to aluminum instead of glass to shed weight, with Apple supposedly solving the wireless charging problem that traditionally required glass backs. The anticipated starting price around $899 positions it as a premium yet accessible option for consumers seeking innovation without Pro-level costs.
Speaking of the back – prepare for a complete camera system overhaul. Leaks point to a horizontal camera bar across the top, housing a single 48MP lens. The new visor-style camera island represents a significant departure from previous iPhone designs. Very Pixel-esque, which is either brilliant borrowing or shameless copying, depending on your fanboy allegiance.
The front should retain the Dynamic Island housing Face ID and potentially a upgraded 24MP selfie camera. Expect the new Camera Control button found on iPhone 16 models, and possibly the Action Button replacing the traditional mute switch.
Despite its anorexic profile, the 17 Air is rumored to pack a 6.6-inch OLED display with 120Hz ProMotion – a feature previously reserved for Pro models. Slim bezels and Always-On capability seem likely.
This might actually be the iPhone that makes people look twice again. Shocking, right?
