Instagram is testing a new feature that could make group storytelling a lot more interesting. Called “Storylines,” the experimental function lets mutual followers link related Stories together, creating a multi-perspective narrative that grows with each contribution. App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi recently spotted the feature in Instagram‘s code, though it’s not available to users yet.

Here’s how it works. You post a Story. Your friends (the ones you follow back) can link their own Story to yours. Before you know it, that concert you attended has perspectives from six different angles. Or that house party suddenly shows what was happening in every room. Pretty neat, right?

Storylines turn single moments into collaborative narratives, weaving multiple perspectives into a richer shared experience.

Storylines fundamentally function as collaborative Story collections. As people join, their mutual followers can jump in too. It’s like the “Add Yours” sticker on steroids. Don’t want someone crashing your narrative? No problem. Settings let you control who can join or turn the feature off entirely.

The visibility system is clever. Public accounts can generate broader participation, since connections of contributors can add content. This naturally boosts each creator’s exposure. Private accounts still maintain control—anyone can see you’re participating in a Storyline, but only your followers see your actual content. Smart.

For Instagram, this move makes perfect sense. The platform’s head, Adam Mosseri, has repeatedly emphasized DMs and Stories as engagement priorities. With TikTok dominating the entertainment space, Instagram needs to double down on its strengths as a connective tool.

Storylines could make Stories “stickier” and more engaging. Users can implement various interactive stickers to encourage participation within their Storyline contributions. Users stand to gain from richer, grouped narratives around shared experiences. Event organizers particularly benefit from this feature as they can create comprehensive event coverage through multiple attendee contributions. Whether it’s a festival, sports event, or just a night out, Storylines create community around common interests.

Will it launch? No guarantees. It’s currently just an internal prototype with no confirmed release date. But compared to Instagram’s recent “Blend” feature for Reels, Storylines seems remarkably more promising. We’ll see.
